OverviewCeilings have evolved from purely functional elements into architectural tools capable of defining the identity of a space. GUBI-SLATS (ond) is an undulating ceiling system made of solid bamboo slats combined with a specially designed substructure that adapts to curved geometries and specific waveforms. The system integrates architectural expression, technical performance and sustainability within a single construction solution.
The architecture of movementGUBI-SLATS (ond) enables the creation of dynamic surfaces that transform spatial perception. Undulations are custom-designed per project and can adapt to different curvature radii, heights and configurations. The combination of slats with different dimensions, spacing and arrangements allows unique compositions that generate changing patterns of light and shadow along the user’s journey. The ceiling becomes a defining element of interior architecture rather than a neutral plane.
Engineering and installationThe formal complexity of an undulating ceiling is resolved through a curved metal structure manufactured to the project geometries. The system comprises galvanized steel tubes, omega bracing profiles and adjustable suspension elements. Bamboo slats are mechanically fixed to this structure using machined aluminium plates, ensuring precise installation, high dimensional stability and rigorous control of tolerances for long-term reliability.
Acoustic comfortBeyond visual impact, undulating slatted ceilings contribute to acoustic conditioning: the variable geometry of the slats promotes sound diffusion and improves acoustic perception in large-volume environments.
Material, safety and sustainabilityThe system is manufactured using solid bamboo slats offering high bending strength, low dimensional expansion due to moisture absorption and excellent structural performance. Fire-retardant treatments can be incorporated to achieve reaction-to-fire classifications up to B-s1,d0 in accordance with EN 13501-1. FSC®-certified bamboo options are available to support sustainability objectives and environmental certifications such as LEED or BREEAM.
Representative projectAn example of large-scale application is the VIP Lounge at Palma de Mallorca Airport, where a continuous undulating acoustic ceiling was executed combining concave and convex areas, a precisely curved metal structure and slatted modules specifically designed to adapt to the final form. The installation demonstrates the system’s ability to deliver warmth, identity and acoustic comfort in high-occupancy public spaces.
